Artist Statement-Alan Michel
When taking on this project, I was struck by the Bank of America Building, which was constructed in 1889-1890 in the Romanesque Revival style., The building’s architectural playfulness and the large reflective windows frame the view of The Andover Town Hall
(constructed in 1858) Its neighboring buildings, with the activity of lighted offices, commercial signage, and the historic Bank building itself, are a collage of past and present, a commentary on the relationship between tradition and modernity. The Bank of America, with its polished glass and stainless-steel masthead, symbolizes the rapid development and financial growth characteristic of contemporary society.
In contrast, the Old Town Hall stands as a testament to Andover's rich history, a reminder of the values, governance, and social gatherings that shaped the town. Its architectural details, brickwork, arches, and mill-era references evoke a sense of nostalgia and stability. The reflection of this historic building on the bank’s surface not only captures a moment in time but also visually represents the ongoing dialogue between these two worlds.
Ultimately, this image serves as a visual meditation on identity, progress, and the stories that linger in the spaces we inhabit. The spaces, empty of people, encourage viewers to consider their own role in the continuum of history, urging us to appreciate the layers of meaning that shape our environments. Through this lens, we can discover that the past is not merely a backdrop but an integral part of our present and future.
